It’s October! The time of year where we all prepare for NFDA...oh wait a minute.
Under normal circumstances, we here at Tukios like to give you death care related sightseeing guides so you can enjoy touring whatever city NFDA is in while keeping in the funeral spirit. Unfortunately this year due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, NFDA has moved to online. Of course keeping everyone safe is the most important, so even though we’ll miss seeing you all at the booth this year, we want to make sure you still have that New Orleans experience. Or at least as close as you can get from the comfort from your own home. Here are 4 suggestions for things you can do while digitally participating in NFDA to feel like you’re in The Big Easy.
1. Make the Local Food
When you think about food in New Orleans, what do you think of? Cajun of course! What could bring you closer to New Orleans than cooking a big pot of gumbo in your home? If you aren’t a fan of seafood or are even just looking for something a little simpler to prepare, a classic New Orleans Muffuletta might be the meal for you.
You’ll need a dessert to enjoy after your Cajun feast, so if you’ve been wanting to try an authentic King Cake from one of New Orleans’ bakeries, many of them offer fast shipping.
2. Surround Yourself with Music
Jazz is the unmistakable sound of the streets in New Orleans. It was birthed from the city’s rich history of several cultures and ethnic groups coming together. French, Spanish, African, Italian, German, and Irish immigrants all came together and their love and style of music all blended into a distinctive sound. Recreate the ambiance of walking down Bourbon Street by listening to a playlist of some of the best jazz music to come from New Orleans.
3. Take a Digital Tour of Famous Cemeteries
New Orleans is known for its unique cemeteries that are full of historic above ground graves. Even though nothing is a replacement for the feeling of quietly walking through an old cemetery full of crumbling mausoleums, a digital tour is the next best thing. Get on Google Earth to “walk through” the famous St. Louis Cemetery No. 1, St. Louis Cemetery No. 2, and the Lafayette Cemetery. To enhance your experience, look up some famous gravesite guides to learn more about who is buried in the tombs.
4. Virtual Bayou Tour
A defining feature of Louisiana is the Bayou, and even though it’s not the same as actually being out on the water, this virtual airboat tour is the next best thing. Click around to see the plants and animals that make up the unique ecosystem.
