The 3-Second Rule: Is Your Website Losing Families?

Do you know what families are actually looking for when they land on your website?
The truth is, almost every visitor is there for one of three reasons. And in today’s digital world, you have about three seconds to show them exactly what they need. If they can’t find it in that window, they’re gone.

Is your website working for your families, or is it getting in their way? Here are the three pillars of a high-performing funeral home website:

1. Obituaries: Front and Center

The vast majority of your traffic is there for one thing: obituaries. They want specifics, and they want them fast. They are looking for:

  1. Service times and directions

  2. A place to leave condolences

  3. Direct links to order flowers

The Fix: Put your recent obituaries front and center on your homepage. There should be zero scrolling required to find the most recent services.

2. At-Need: Immediate Help

When a loss has just occurred, families are often in a state of shock and looking for immediate guidance. They need to know they can reach you right now.

The Fix: Your 24/7 phone number needs to be impossible to miss. It should be prominently displayed at the top of every page, especially on mobile, where a "click-to-call" button can be a lifesaver.

3. Pre-Need: Quiet Research

Some visitors aren't in crisis; they’re doing quiet research for the future. They want information without feeling pressured by a sales pitch.

The Fix: Give them clear, low-pressure options. Add a bold "Plan Ahead" section to your homepage that guides them toward the resources they need to start the conversation on their own terms.

Take the "Instant Spot" Challenge

Don’t just take our word for it - test it yourself! Grab your phone right now and pull up your funeral home’s homepage.

Can you instantly spot these three things?

  1. Obituaries?

  2. 24/7 Contact Info?

  3. Pre-Need Options?

If you have to hunt for any of these, your website might be costing you connections with the families in your community.
